Frequently Asked Questions
Some common questions about acupuncture and fertility are answered below. Call us if you have other questions or if you are interested in improving your life through acupuncture treatments.
Why Fertility Supported Acupuncture?
The Traditional Chinese Medicinal (TCM) approach of acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy is gentle, yet very effective. Many women do not need fertility drugs and medically assisted reproductive techniques, yet they go through months of physical and emotional stress, not to mention the financial burden. The NFT approach to fertility support is safe, non-invasive, natural, cost effective, and has no side effects. In fact, a TCM approach can only make you stronger, while helping to create a healthier environment for a harmonious pregnancy.
What About My “Reproductive Clock?”
You are not alone. Approximately one in six to ten couples experience problems with fertility. Innumerable women grieve the loss of a potential child once a month, and lose a little more hope with each passing menstrual cycle. We believe that we can give you reason for optimism.
It is very common for couples today to feel like “it is getting too late; we must employ severe measures”. While it is true that the average couple waits until later in life to conceive, TCM may help “turn back the reproductive clock”. Please be patient with yourself. It may take three to five cycles to normalize a woman’s cycle; perhaps longer if she has taken fertility drugs, has a history of sexually transmitted disease, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or polycystic ovaries. Likewise, it takes 90 days to generate new sperm in a man. If he has a history of exposure to radiation, marijuana or drug and alcohol abuse, urological complications,or being an avid biker it may take longer to regenerate his reproductive capacity.
How Can TCM Treat Hormonal Imbalances?
Many hormonal problems are due to slight imbalances in the delicate endocrine system, which may alter how the body produces hormones. A slight aberration can throw the entire system off so it no longer functions smoothly. Research has shown that acupuncture influences these hormonal pathways and restore endocrine harmony. Certain meridians influence the internal organs, some of which control the reproductive organs. Other meridians affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which is responsible for ovulation and sperm production. All of the meridians need to be balanced for optimum function.
Modern diagnostic techniques may not detect any laboratory abnormality or functional causes at all. This does not necessarily mean that fertility drugs or surgical procedures are warranted.
Do you have an age limit for fertility treatment?
We know that fertility decreases with age. Women in their forties do not get pregnant as easily and have an increased rate of miscarriage. However, fertility does not stop on your fortieth birthday. We treat each woman individually and would counsel you on your available options.
What Can I Do To Help Myself?
- First of all, the more you can eliminate nicotine, caffeine, drugs and alcohol, the higher your chances of success. Take a wholefood multivitamin and mineral complex with iron and folic acid,
- Only eat hormone free meat – the typical American diet is loaded with harmful synthetic estrogens,
- Don’t eat soy products,
- Exercise moderately, and employ deep breathing techniques,
- Become actively aware of your fertility signs (cervical mucus, temperature charting, etc)
Does acupuncture for fertility really work?
There are no 100% effective treatments, as everyone is different. Acupuncture isn’t a one-time deal either. It takes a course of treatments to glean the benefits. But acupuncture can significantly enhance your chances at conception and a healthy pregnancy by addressing underlying causes of infertility and creating a healthy reproductive environment. It’s important to see a licensed, fully trained acupuncturist for the highest chances of success.
